The Wild Pacific Trail

Ucluelet's Wild Pacific Trail is one of the region's greatest assets. It winds along the rocky Vancouver Island coast for kilometers revealing coastal vistas and rainforest wonders that would otherwise be inaccessible or have been destroyed by development. Many of the photos and video I capture would not have been possible without the trail.

Some people think it's an extension of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve or confuse it with the West Coast Trail which runs along the coast on the other side of Barkley Sound. The Wild Pacific Trail is its own entity and falls entirely within Ucluelet (even though it's often at the top of "10 best things to do it Tofino" lists). It's free to use and has many sections that are very accessible, including for wheelchair users.

The trail isn't just a ribbon of dirt through the trees and over the rocks. It's also the host of many interpretive programs teach biology, geography, history and more to visitors and locals alike. The Wild Pacific Trail Society, along with other local non-profits have a space in the renovated lighthouse keeper's house at Amphitrite Point that provides more information, plumbed washrooms and hot coffee by donation. The Amphitrite House's balcony provides one of the best, safest and most accessible storm watching spots in the area. The opening bit of this video was shot from that balcony;

While the maintenance of the trail itself is covered by the District of Ucluelet these programs, informative plaques and other initiatives are funded by grants and donations to the Wild Pacific Trail Society. Occasionally I'll have pop-up print sales with a portion of proceeds going to the trail but, like all non-profits it seems funding is lacking.
